A different take on sprawl

Posted at May 17, 2007 by mattw

So, a few people think that I tend to rant about the American obsession with sprawl. Here’s a guy who rants a lot more than I do, and has some interesting points about architecture and design and how where and how we choose to live affects who we are and what we will become.

(Warning, some child-unsafe language ahead)

Floodplain development

Many who know me know that I frequently bring up this issue in some of my discussions (ok, rants) regarding the issue of ex-urban sprawl in the St. Louis metropolitan area.  Some of the numbers in this article are frightening.

A Hike in the Park

Posted at May 6, 2007 by mattw

The little one and I got to have a “daddy day” today as lib headed off to work her Sunday shift. We went on a nice hike at St. Edward’s State Park, a really nice former Catholic Seminary just north of here on the lake. We hiked for about 2 hours down to the water and back up. The little one had a great time, we had bought a carrier yesterday at REI. Speaking of which, that is my new “most dangerous store for Matt to walk into with a credit card” I almost came home with a Kayak, despite the fact I a.> don’t know how to Kayak, b.> have never kayaked before, c.> have no where to put said kayak, d.> really did not want to see Lib’s face when I showed up with a 16 foot boat strapped to the top of the wagon.

I think we’ll just rent one the first few times :-)
